RECOMMENDED: Howl’s Moving Castle (2004)

Howl’s Moving Castle as recommended by Sam Backhouse:

Loosely based upon the novel of the same name by Diane Wynne Jones,
Howl’s Moving Castle is the 2004 film from Japanese animation studio, Studio Ghibli. The English dubbed version of this film boasts an array of well known voices including Christian Bale as Howl and Billy Crystal as Calcifer.

Grandma Sophie and Howl

Released in both Japanese and English dubbed, Howl’s Moving Castle tells the story of Sophie, an unconfident girl whose encounter with a witch leaves her with the body of an old woman. In a quest to return to her young body, she befriends cocky, young wizard, Howl and his friends in his walking castle.

With a wonderful story and beautiful animation, Howl’s Moving Castle is a jewel in Studio Ghibli’s crown. An assortment of cute creatures guarantees the cute factor and is a film that the whole family will love. For an animation it is quite long, coming in at almost two hours but they are very enjoyable hours. Howl’s Moving Castle is a treat for the eyes and minds of young and old

Would I recommend it? Yes I would. Everything about this film is wonderful but the animation is the stand out feature. It really is a treat for the eyes.

This internationally acclaimed feature film blends Japanese folklore and storybook charm reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland into an exhilarating tale sure to amaze animation fans of all ages. Sixteen-year-old Haruka is on a mission to find her mirror—a precious childhood gift from her late mother that has disappeared. On her search, she follows a strange fox-like creature to Oblivion Island, a mystical world overflowing with once-cherished items taken from their neglectful owners. Trouble follows Haruka and her new friend Teo at every turn as they contend with the island’s overbearing ruler, who will stop at nothing to use the mirror for his own sinister plan!”
