Disney heroes are difficult to write about, everyone has their own favourite. It covers such a wide spectrum of films that it’s difficult to pin down exactly who is a Disney hero. Unlike Disney Princesses, you can’t just go by who has a crown and who doesn’t. So here is my personal list of Disney heroes.
10. Hercules (Hercules)
An obvious choice, I know. What more can I say, he’s a Greek God, you can’t really miss him off a heroes list!
9. Kermit the Frog (The Muppets)
How can the friendly green amphibian not appear on the list? His determination and strong will bring The Muppets back together when the Muppets Studios is in danger. His undying love for Miss Piggy gets him travelling the world to win her heart again.
8. The Genie (Aladdin)
He may be a prisoner in his own home, but really the Genie is his own saviour. He leads Aladdin down the right path to his happiness and so grants the Genie his freedom. The Genie’s wise cracks, and kind heart make him the comedic hero, and everyone’s favourite character.
Flynn, or rather Eugene, is very much an anti-hero. He very much does not want to be the suave and sophisticated prince who sweeps the princess off her feet, all he wants is a beautiful house with a view to match – and will do anything to get it and accidentally rescuing a princess was very much not on his to-do list!
6. Jim Hawkins (Treasure Planet)
Treasure Planet is a forgotten about Disney film – even though it was nominated for an Oscar! Those who have seen it absolutely love it, myself included. Jim, like most Disney characters, just follows his heart to take control of his dreams. Travelling through space with an unlikely band of misfits, Jim learns about the best things in life, and that maybe, just maybe, she should have listened to his mother!
5. Sally (A Nightmare Before Christmas)
Sally is a sorely underrated character. When Jack Skellington wishes to take over holiday that he knows nothing about it probably wasn’t the best idea in the world. Neither was kidnapping the only man who can take control of the holiday, but Sally stayed by his side through the entire thing. She was ultimately the one who saved the day. She warned Jack of the doom he would face if he tried to take control of Christmas, and even tried to sabotage the take off. Ultimately she saves the day by rescuing Santa Claus from Oogie Boogies lair.
4. Mrs Potts (Beauty and the Beast)
The loveable teapot, with an even more lovable teacup son, is the mother of the Beast’s castle. She looks after everyone, from The Beast to Maurice and Belle. She also seems to be the only character that the Beast actually listens to. Her voice of reason never waivers and she’s always there whenever anyone needs her. The kind hearted piece of china does have a mean streak though – commanding the other teapots to pour scalding tea over the invading villagers!
3. Merida (Brave)
Merida, the flame haired Scotswoman, is determined to be in control of her own destiny. Her mother expects her to be an elegant princess but Merida has better ideas. She is a better archer than all the men, and plans to stay that way. She’s a role model to many young women, and rightly so! She does what she loves and follows her heart – a trait that many people would love to have.
2. Tiana (The Princess and the Frog)
Unlike most of the princesses in Disney films, Tiana comes from very humble beginnings. Working extra hard for everything she wants, Tiana achieves her dreams by working hard and never giving up. Even when a prince comes along and whisks her off her feet (and into frog form), and gets married it doesn’t let it change her. No golden palace for Tiana, just her own dream restaurant and a man she loves.
1. Mulan (Mulan)
She disguises herself as a man and goes off to war to ensure her elderly father doesn’t have to. She keeps her identity a secret when faced with adversity, overcoming her downfalls to become one of the best soldiers. She helps to save the Emperor from the Huns AND happens to fall in love along the way! Mulan well and truly deserves the top spot on my list best Disney heroes!
If you hadn’t have guessed, I’m a bit of a fan of the strong independent women! Disney is often criticised for making their female characters very dependant on their princes, but as you can see, it’s not really the case. The more modern Disney films have women holding their own, and kicking butt the same amount as the men!
