On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me, a Gremlin who is a cutie!
Let’s ease you in gently into the world of Christmas films, starting off with the 1984 classic Gremlins. One cold December night, Randall, Billy’s father is given a fluffy little creature called a Mogwai and given three simple rules:
- Do not feed after midnight
- Do not put in bright light
- Do not get wet
Deciding it’s wrong to keep a live animal hidden until Christmas, Randall passes the Mogwai onto his son Billy who names him Gizmo. He sets out to look after the fluffy creature, but when he accidentally feeds him after midnight, Gizmo spawns five evil gremlins – the complete opposite of adorable Gizmo. The new Gremlins lead by mohawked Spike, set out to cause mayhem – killing Billy’s dog, chewing through wires, even killing Billy’s science teacher!
OK, it’s not the most Christmassy of film, filled with death and destruction but it is set mainly on Christmas Eve so you can’t deny it’s festivity. Though Gremlin Christmas carollers aren’t exactly what I’d like appearing on my doorstep anytime soon!
Note: Anyone who denies begging for a Gizmo for Christmas at some point in their existence is a liar!
