In the space of 36 hours, a group of Los Angeles citizens with vastly different lives, all collide through a series of unfortunate events.
This critically acclaimed film has been topping “best of” lists for years and it’s very easy to see why. The intricate plot weaves the stories of at least 10 main characters together, with each one gaining sufficient screen time to explore enough of their backgrounds and stories. This in itself is an impressive feat with a run time of less that two hours!
With a cast containing one Oscar winner, four nominees and multiple other award winners, it could be argued that this film was never going to go wrong. Starring Sandra Bullock, Matt Dillon, Terrence Howard, Don Cheadle and Thandie Newton along with far too many others to list in one sentence. As long with being a seriously star-studded production, it also has to be one of the most multi-cultural productions to have come out of Hollywood for a very long time.
Released in 2004, Crash is the epitome of post 9/11 paranoia. At the time the film was released, the events were still very fresh and raw in everyone’s minds leading to many films focussing on the tension that was held between everyone, not matter what their skin tone or nationality.
The sad thing is, the feelings of prejudice and nervousness which is so crucial to the plot, are more relevant today as it was twelve years ago. With so many news stories coming out of America about police officers shooting unarmed teens to immigrants who have been living in the country for decades legally suddenly being turned away from places they frequent, Crash could have been made yesterday rather than over a decade ago.
Simply put, I can’t believe I’ve gone this long without seeing this film!
